As the COVD-19 pandemic entered its second year, educational institutions continued to pivot and reevaluate best practices for students and learning environments. For art and design schools, such as Rhode Island School of Design, the challenge for remote learning is intensified within an environment so connected to materiality, studio spaces, and in-person resources for its makers and designers.

Coupled with the Black Lives Matter movement and the 2020 US election, the pandemic has formulated radical opportunities for consciousness and scholarship. Recognizing that these challenges are unique for each individual, directors from several departments across campus were asked to reflect on what 'pivoting' has meant in their work amidst the multiple complexities within their academic community on the pandemic's anniversary.
